Vicki Gabereau. ICBC’s (somewhat reluctant) Demystifier of Car Insurance.
I thought all I need to know about car insurance I learned in kindergarten. I must have been sick the day Mrs. Taylor talked about third party liability because that’s always confused me. Turns out it’s one of the three basics we all should know about car insurance.
Collision insurance demystified.
Let’s say I’m driving and hit a cedar tree parked on the side of the road. Well, my ICBC collision insurance covers repairs to my vehicle. Whether I’ve collided with another car, a fire hydrant, said tree, collision insurance will get my vehicle back on the road, even if I’m responsible.
Comprehensive insurance demystified.
Ok, now let’s say I’m cruising down the highway and a rock flies up and cracks my windshield. Comprehensive insurance to the rescue! It covers damage to my car caused by things collision insurance doesn’t cover – vandalism, hail, floodwater, theft and other bad stuff.
Third party liability demystified.
Let’s say I’m driving and I crash into someone, third party liability coverage will protect me from having to pay for someone else’s injuries or property damage. It’s part of ICBC’s basic Autoplan insurance and I’m covered for costs up to $200,000. If you want to learn more, check out ICBC’s website.
Did you know?
There are more than 900 ICBC Autoplan broker offices around the province. They can answer your questions and help you figure out the best insurance fit for you and your family.
A valuable tip.
Your ICBC Basic Autoplan includes third party liability coverage up to $200,000, but most people choose the extra security of coverage of $2 million or more. That’s known as extended third party liability.
